I\u2019m Erin Roberts!\u00a0I am a Black\u00a0speculative fiction and game writer\u00a0and a Provost\u2019s Early Career Fellow in the English Department at UT-Austin. I primarily\u00a0write about worlds that don\u2019t yet (quite) exist\u00a0\u2013 visions of the almost future, sideways glimpses into magic realms, quick trips into the land of the horrifyingly possible. I am also fascinated by people who embody one of my favorite Sondheim lyrics:\u00a0<em>nice is different than good<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.writingwonder.com\/who-i-am-what-i-write\/#games\">gaming and interactive<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;side of things, I build worlds, develop lore, and write adventures for tabletop roleplaying games (TTRPGs) across systems. In 2023, I was selected as a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dianajonesaward.org\/2023-emerging-designers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Diana Jones Award Emerging Game Designer<\/a>, and my recent credits include contributions to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nebulas.sfwa.org\/award-year\/2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nebula Award<\/a>&nbsp;finalist and silver ENnie award-winner for Best Adventure,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dnd.wizards.com\/products\/journeys-through-radiant-citadel?v=6ptZh9mYRPp5SpWB0cI0Vo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Journeys Through the Radiant Citadel<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;(D&amp;D), featuring an adventure and a new location created as an homage\/love letter to the Black experience in the US South,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/paizo.com\/products\/btq02e6p\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Pathfinder: Lost Omens Highhelm<\/em><\/a>, which explores the dwarven city of Highhelm in incredible detail, and MCDM\u2019s<em>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/shop.mcdmproductions.com\/collections\/arcadia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Arcadia 30<\/a>,<\/em>&nbsp;in an article that creates new mechanics and NPCs for folk magic in D&amp;D 5E. I\u2019ve also been part of the script writing team for several seasons of the&nbsp;long-form audio narrative exergame&nbsp;<em>Zombies, Run!<\/em>, and created\/coded two interactive fiction pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am a graduate of the Odyssey Writers Workshop and hold an MFA from the University of Southern Maine. I\u2019m proud to have been awarded the Speculative Literature Foundation\u2019s 2017 Diverse Worlds Grant and Diverse Writers Grant and a 2019 Individual Artist Award from the Maryland State Arts Council, and been selected to attend Hedgebrook in 2022 and Storyknife in 2023 as a Writer in Residence. I\u2019ve also had the honor of having one of my stories, \u201cSour Milk Girls,\u201d included in the Best Science Fiction of the Year, vol. 4, The Year\u2019s Best Dark Fantasy and Horror 2019, and the Year\u2019s Best Science Fiction &amp; Fantasy 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And finally, I enjoy talking and teaching about writing \u2013 in addition to teaching at University of Texas at Austin, I\u2019m one of the hosts of the weekly writing advice podcast&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/writingexcuses.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Writing Excuses<\/a>&nbsp;alongside Mary Robinette Kowal, Dan Wells, Howard Tayler, and DongWon Song.
